Marina, I agree with the respondent. I don't know how Stathekis can say he saved the Township 4.1 mil, unless he is including the monies that ex-Chief Levan saved him on the police station. Go through the Hall Road section of Shelby, down Van Dyke, down Shelby Pkwy, the mile roads, etc. Kuka opened in the parkway area, but there are a lot of now abandoned buildings in that area. Oh ya, we have a …   more ›

Economy Hits Bellacino's Pizza and Grinders Hard, Forces Restaurant to Close

After ten years of serving hot pizzas and grinders, Bellacino's in Shelby Township has closed its doors.

After nearly ten years, Bellacino’s Pizza and Grinders in Shelby Township has turned off the flashing red open sign. Instead, hanging in the window of the restaurant on 26 Mile Road is a small white sign that says, “closed as of Oct. 21.” Bellacino’s Marketing Manager Jason Pesola said the economy, bouts of road construction and rising price of doing business had taken a toll on local franchise owner, Ray Pini. “The strain of the expenses finally won and he (Pini) was forced to close,” said Pesola.  “It was hard for him to do and it was the best decision.” Pini of Shelby Township took a chance on the Michigan-based franchise nearly ten years ago. Now, there are 68 restaurants around the country. For the people who can’t live without their …

1st Massage Center in Shelby Township To Open Since Restrictions Lifted

LaVida Massage will open its doors today to the chain's newest location in Shelby Township.

After succeeding in convincing Shelby Township to reverse a two decade-old restriction on opening massage parlors in the township, LaVida Massage will open today inside the Crossing Shopping Center on Hall and Schoenherr roads. In March, the Shelby Township Board of Trustees loosened restrictions on massage parlors in the township after an ordinance in the 1990s was passed to prevent prostitution at massage establishments. The new ordinance paved the way for the 3,000 square foot massage center, which will feature 11 massage rooms, one dedicated esthetics/facial room and one spray tanning room. LaVida Massage was started in Commerce in 2007. There are now over 50 centers in the United States and Canada. The Shelby Township location will be…

Sahara Restaurant and Grill opened it's doors inside the Vitale Plaza.

Get your hookah and hummus on at Shelby Township's newest Mediterranean establishment, Sahara Restaurant and Grill. After seeing coming soon signs in the Vitale Plaza on 25 and Van Dyke, Sahara opened it's doors to the public in July. The Shelby Township location marks the fourth family-owned restaurant in Michigan. The other three Sahara Restaurants can be found in Oak Park, Farmington Hills and Sterling Heights. Part owner and manager Kenny Hermiz told Patch the food at Sahara reflects his family's traditional Chaldean cuisine from Iraq, but also mixes Mediterranean dishes from Greece to Lebanon, Syria and Egypt. For example, the curry stew, can be found from my family's hometown of Baghdad, Hermiz told Patch. However, you can't visit …

The Way We Work: Graduating Job Hunters Play Waiting Game at Home

In a difficult economy, many graduates return to their childhood homes looking for work.

Many college graduates are finding themselves in a decidedly retro phenomenon, where economic independence starts from the security of their parents' homes. "What seems to be changing is not that kids are returning home for a while after college, but how long they are living at home before they can leave," said Lawrence Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Long Island's Hofstra University. That could have widespread implications for local communities. Changing economic dynamics and cultural shifts are among the reasons experts cite for the re-emergence of nuclear, multi-generational family homes not unlike family units of post-WWII America. More Kids at Home, Less Stigma A study by the Pew Research Center of …

Local Restaurateurs Open 1st of 20 Michigan-Planned Jersey Mike's Sub Shops in Shelby

Jersey MIke's East Coast sub shop to hit the mitten state hard with Shelby Township grand opening.

These days, you can't go too far without hearing about the Jersey Shore ever since the MTV Smash hit, the Jersey Shores debuted in 2009. Now, it just got a little closer to home. Jersey Mike's Sub Shop will open its second location in Michigan on Sept. 5 in Shelby Township. The sub shop is located at 12161 23 Mile Rd, in the plaza in front of WalMart, where Patty Cakes Bakery was for less than a year. Although there are more than 750 Jersey Mike's franchises open and under development nationwide, three local restaurateurs are bringing the more than 50-year-old business to Michigan in a big way. Oakland and Macomb County residents Bob Middleton, Carl Chandler and Bill Biga plan on opening 20 Jersey Mike’s locations in the next 5 years in …
