Several hundred people turned out for Lakeside Assembly of God's back-to-school Big Give charity event Wednesday evening.
Hundreds of Macomb County residents who need a little help getting their kids off to school attended Lakeside Assembly of God's back-to-school Big Give event in Shelby Township Wednesday evening. "We're feeding the body, mind, soul and spirit," said Lakeside Assembly of God Pastor Phil Krist. "That's why I think this event is so successful." The evening started off with an introduction to the church and a prayer session and then the families were ushered off to play, get pampered and shop. There was something fun for all ages; the younger children were entertained by the youth pastor and a $25,000 stage that included a "foaminator" and talking puppets. Yard sale helps raise funds for Shelby Bible Church’s missionary trip.
While teens her age spend the summer working, with friends or at the mall, Kayla Leach, 15, of Macomb Township, will be on a mission trip in New Orleans, where she will clean, paint, and do whatever she can to help those still feeling the affects of Hurricane Katrina. Although it’s been almost six years since the August 2005 hurricane flooded 80 percent of the city, there is still much left to do to rebuild the devastated area. Kayla and her mother Yalonda are among 21 teen and parent volunteers from Shelby Bible Church who will spend a week in New Orleans ministering to people of the area. Shelby Township church gives away furniture, clothing and more to Macomb County families.
Lakeside Assembly of God hosted its annual Big Give event the evening of May 26. More than 100 volunteers offered clothing, bed and bath products, grocery items, furniture, baby supplies, various household items and more to 58 Macomb County families. Stylists also offered free haircuts. Several community service agencies referred the families to the event.
