Six Detroit Lions players presented Jack Harvey Elementary School students a $10,000 grant to promote physical fitness.
Tuesday was a day Jack Harvey Elementary School students won't soon forget. The NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest selected one school in each of the 32 NFL markets and two non-NFL markets to receive the cash. Parent Carol Beninati, who runs after school student health club at Jack Harvey, entered the school for the grant. "To see these kids faces today is just priceless," Beninati told Patch. Gavin Smith has a dream job with the Detroit Lions, but the position takes hard work, dedication and creativity.
After opening a second studio, surviving a grinding wedding season and taking thousands of senior pictures, a fall Sunday sounds like a great time for an average professional photographer to put their feet up and relax. However, Fenton’s Gavin Smith is not your average professional photographer. A fall Sunday means more lenses, lighting, pressure to be at his best and another a full day of work, with perhaps a little fun mixed in along the way. Smith serves as the officials Detroit Lions photographer, a position he earned in 2006. While it sounds like a glorious job, and Smith loves every bit of it, it’s still a stressful position, especially when he hasn’t had a day off in three weeks. Pre-game warm-up Smith doesn’t wait until kickoff to …

Here's the video, filmed in part at Meadow Brook Hall. It premiered during halftime of today's Detroit Lions home opener.
'We don't even have to try — it's always a good time." That was the phrase performed again and again, from the dunes of Lake Michigan to Meadow Brook Hall in Rochester, during the filming of a Pure Michigan video that shows off the depth of tourist attractions in the state. The video, filmed for Pure Michigan by Jeff Barrett and Rob Bliss of Status Creative, features an elegant dinner party scene at Meadow Brook Hall. It was filmed two weeks ago as part of a weeklong road trip to 50 tourist stops in Michigan. (Read "Black Tie Sing-Along is Rochester's Contribution to Pure Michigan Video") The three-minute video, which can be viewed here, premiered at halftime of the Detroit Lions-St. Louis Rams game on Sunday; the singalong song was Carly …

The Detroit Lions face a big task when the 10-0 Green Bay Packers visit Ford Field on Thanksgiving.
Can the Lions defeat the unbeaten Packers? That’s the question heading into Thanksgiving, when the defending Super Bowl champion and 10-0 Green Bay Packers visit Ford Field to take on the hometown Detroit Lions. Kickoff is at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, and the game will be televised on Fox. While locals sports fans long have viewed the Thanksgiving game with pride, even when the Lions have struggled, this year’s Turkey Day matchup figures to draw national attention because both teams are surging. The Lions and the Packers enter the game with a combined record of 17-3, and Sports Illustrated’s Peter King says this is the best Detroit Thanksgiving game since 1962. Rock band's scheduled appearance has drawn the ire of Detroit Lions' fans.
Nickelback? Step back! In the past, Detroit Lions fans have had plenty to complain about on the field, from Scott Mitchell and Joey Harrington to Bobby Ross and Marty Mornhinweg. But now that quarterback Matthew Stafford and wide receiver Calvin Johnson have helped the Lions to a 6-2 start this season, Lions fans have a new complaint: the band on the field at halftime for this year’s Thanksgiving Day showdown against the Green Bay Packers. Dennis Guttman, a student at the University of Michigan, has started a petition to ask the Lions to drop Nickelback from the rock band’s scheduled appearance at the Nov. 24 game. The petition rails against the group, asking "Does anyone even like Nickelback?" One commenter, Eva Blankinship, said she …
