Suspect In Monday's Utica Dollar Tree Robbery In Police Custody

Suspect confessed to four other Macomb county robberies.

The man who robbed the Dollar Tree at 13477 Hall Road at gunpoint Monday is in custody, according to Utica Police Cheif David Faber.  The suspect is Steven Paul Champine, 55, of Chesterfield Township. Champine has confessed to this robbery and four other recent robberies within Macomb County.  Champine was arraigned in the 41-B District Court yesterday stemming from charges obtained by the Clinton Township Police Department. The Utica Police Department expects to arraign Champine early next week for the Dollar Tree robbery.  Police said Champine entered the Dollar Tree around 4 p.m. Monday. Utica Police: Serial Thief Robs Dollar Tree at Gunpoint

Utica police are looking for a man who held-up the Dollar Tree at gunpoint Monday.

Utica police are looking for a serial thief who robbed a store at gunpoint Monday in the city. The man, described as white and between 40 and 50 years old, is suspected of similar crimes in Chesterfield, Sterling Heights and Roseville. Police said the man entered the Dollar Tree at 13477 Hall Road around 4 p.m. Just before approaching the teller, the man covered his face with a handkerchief and then pointed a black pistol at the cashier while he demanded cash. The thief was able to get away with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said. Witnesses reported seeing an older red vehicle--possibly a Ford Escort--fleeing the scene.
