Macomb Sheriff Anthony Wickersham released drinking and driving statistics from the St. Patrick's Day holiday. According to a release, there were seven people arrested for drinking and drivign related offenses over a 24-hour period during the St. Patrick’s Day holiday. “We will continue our efforts to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes on Macomb County Roads” says Sheriff Wickersham in a release. A 19-year-old Shelby Township man accused of drunken driving is facing multiple felony charges after police say he lost control of his car and drove into another vehicle carrying a family of four Sunday in Chesterfield Township. Brandon Ostipow was arraigned Thursday in 42-2 District Court in New Baltimore on three counts of operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, three counts of operating with a suspended license causing injury, and one count of unlawful use of a motor vehicle. While the unlawful use charge is a misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in jail, the other six counts are felony charges punishable by up to five years in jail each, according to police. A Wayne County Circuit Court judge has sentenced David L. Lamberson to 10 to 15 years in prison for causing the accident that killed two children in January 2012.
A 63-year-old Shelby Township man has been sentenced to 10 to 15 years behind bars for causing the accident that killed two Eastpointe children one year ago, The Macomb Daily reports. David L. Lamberson was driving drunk when he crashed his vehicle into the car carrying Arlita Lee and her two children, Alana Lee, 8, and Lavale Harvey Jr., 2. Both children died from their injuries. Originally charged with two counts of second-degree murder, Lamberson pleaded no contest Dec. 13 to operating while intoxicated causing death. This lesser offense, punishable by up to 15 years in prison, was the result of a plea deal with Wayne County prosecutors, according to The Macomb Daily. Ferndale police have organized a non-alcoholic benefit at Rosie O'Grady's Thursday to help one of their officer's whose 3-year-old daughter who was killed in a drunk driving crash in Shelby Township.
The life of a Ferndale police officer who is credited with arresting more drunk drivers last year than any other police officer in his department was forever changed June 25 when a drunk driver crashed into his family's vehicle and killed his 3-year-old daughter. A drunken driver broadsided the minivan John Cleveland and wife Jodie, along with three children, were traveling in on 23 Mile and Hayes in Shelby Township. The family lives in Macomb Township. The Utica police arrested a man on Hall Road after they said he passed out in his vehicle while stopped at a red light.
A 19-year-old Shelby Township man was arrested on charges of operating while under the influence of alcohol on Sept. 6 after a Utica police officer found him sleeping inside his vehicle at green light on Hall Road. A Utica police officer said in a report that just before 3 a.m., he noticed a vehicle had remained stationary on M-59 after the traffic light turned green. The cars behind began to honk and pass the stationary vehicle. When the officer arrived, he noticed a man "slumped over" sleeping in the driver's seat. The vehicle was still in gear and the driver's foot was on the brake. The officer said the man was "in a deep sleep" when he knocked on the window to wake up the driver. If drinking and driving is your modus operandi, then steer clear of Utica. The 13-officer police force arrested 171 motorists for driving under the influence in 2011, according to Police Chief Dave Faber. If you take the number of arrests, divided by officers, each officer made an average of 15 DUI arrests per year—compared to .03 DUI arrests made by the 2,800 officers on the Detroit police force, according to MLive.com. Two Utica officers in particular are credited with making the majority of the arrests: Officers Ken Hunt and Matthew Kalunzy together made 127 DUI arrests out of the departments 171. “These two officers do an outstanding job to make our community safer,” said Faber. The driver of a vehicle that ran a red light last night at 23 Mile Road and Hayes, hitting a minivan carrying a family of five, has passed away. A 3-year-old child passenger in the minivan has also died.
A 3-year-old passenger and the female driver of a vehicle involved in a crash Monday night on 23 Mile Road have passed away, according the the Shelby Township police. The crash, which occurred around 8:45 p.m. at the intersection of 23 Mile and Hayes roads sent all six people involved, including three children, to the hospital. Police said the woman who died was driving an Oldsmobile west on 23 Mile Road when she ran a red light and hit a minivan traveling south on Hayes Road. There were five people in the minivan, an adult male and female and three children.
