Under Michigan fireworks law, residents can use consumer fireworks on the day before, day of and day after a national holiday, including Labor Day.
While Labor Day may not be considered a "fireworks holiday" by everyone, it is one of 10 national holidays on which the use of these colorful explosives is permitted by Michigan law. Under the state's controversial new fireworks law, residents can ignite, discharge and use consumer fireworks the day before, day of and day after a national holiday. Although residents across Michigan have asked legislators to repeal the Fireworks Safety Act of 2011, which was designed to increase revenue to the state and encourage citizens to buy consumer fireworks in Michigan rather than in neighboring states, the law has been neither revised nor repealed to date. Firefighters, chief not fans of new fireworks law.
The new fireworks law not only lead to an increase in noise, it may also be linked to two July 4 house fires in Shelby Township. Firefighters responded to a house fire at a home on Schoenherr Road, the Oakland Press reported. The fire began on the roof of the home and spread to the attic. No one was in the home at the time of the fire. It’s likely fireworks caused the fire, although the incident is still under investigation, according to Chief Doug Miller. In another incident a projectile firework launched into a window pane in a home on Cedarwood Drive, near 22 Mile Road and M-53. No one was injured in the incident, but firefighters had a hard time reaching the home because of the number of spectators. “Because there were so cars …

Everywhere in southeast Michigan Wednesday night, fireworks, smoke and lots of pops and booms filled the air. Folks were amused and/or annoyed with the results of the new law. What did you think?
State law now allows more types of fireworks to be sold and ignited in Michigan had people reacting Wednesday night. There were far more pops and booms and sparks in the air far and wide across southeast Michigan. Some were thrilled with the spectacle. Others were miffed with the noise and smoke. Before you head out to the Riverdays Festival in Utica July 5-8, find out where to park and which streets will be closed.
The small city of Utica, which has just under 5,000 residents, is hoping to double it's population size in visitors this weekend during the first annual Riverwalk Festival. The city, along with the help of local business owners, has orchestrated a massive four day festival July 5-8, that will include family-fun events such as a carnival, fireworks show on Friday and Saturday nights, a plastic piggy race, classic car cruise and live music. Patch has a full list of festivities and a schedule of events. But with the swell in visitors comes street closures and designated parking lots. An 18-year-old Warren man accused of shooting another man at the Mount Clemens fireworks will have a preliminary exam this month. Demitrus Ludaway is scheduled for a preliminary exam at 8:30 a.m. July 16 at 41B District Court in Clinton Township before Judge Linda Davis, according to the court. Ludaway faces charges of assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and felony firearm, police said. He was lodged in Macomb County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 cash/surety bond. Around 10:35 p.m. Friday, several eyewitnesses say Ludaway shot a 19-year-old Detroit man in the leg in the area of North Main Street and Market, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said. The stage is set for Utica's first Riverwalk Festival in downtown Utica July 6-8. The festival is the brainchild of Utica's Downtown Development, which is made up of area business owners. DDA members said the summber bash will celebrate the Riverwalk and downtown businesses. Attendees are in for a big treat as the inaugural festival will include two days of spectacular fireworks, a carnival, a classic car cruise, a piggy race fundraiser, live music and a parade.
