Record Numbers Freeze Their Frannies in 5K Run/Walk at Stony Creek

More than 1,100 runners registered for the third annual event, hosted by the Utica Education Association and Utica Paraprofessionals Association.

The third annual Freeze Your Franny 5K run/walk lived up to its name Saturday, with a record number of runners braving bitter temperatures to take part in the race. Organized by the Utica Education Association and Utica Paraprofessionals Association, the Freeze Your Franny 5K celebrated its third year at Stony Creek Metropark Saturday, Jan. 26. 'Freeze Your Franny' to Benefit 3 Macomb Co. Charities, Promote Healthy Living

The 2013 Freeze Your Franny 5K run/walk is Jan. 26 at Stony Creek Metropark, with proceeds benefiting MCREST, the Macomb County Food Bank and 4 Paws 1 Heart.

With warming tents, snow-free running paths and an endless supply of hot cocoa, organizers of the Freeze Your Franny 5K say there is no excuse for skipping this winter exercise and charitable fund-raiser. “This is a no excuse event,” said event director and Roberts Elementary teacher Nancy Smith. “This is a chance to get out and get active in the winter. Freeze Your Fanny Nets Nearly 1,000 Runners And Walkers

Record number turn out for Saturday's winter race at Stony Creek.

Nearly 1,000 runners and walkers hurtled through Stony Creek Metropark Saturday morning during the second annual “Freeze Your Franny” 5K race. The record number of participants braved below freezing temperatures, blowing snow, and sometimes brisk winds during the event.  This was the second year for the race, sponsored by the Utica Education Association’s Staywell Committee; about 450 registered in 2011. Nancy Smith, Freeze Your Fanny event director and president of the Staywell Committee, believes the numbers were up because there are fewer opportunities to run in the cold and the event is well organized.
