Fuel Report: Prices Drop for Memorial Day, but Still Among Highest in History

This year's holiday weekend ranks as the third costliest for a gallon of unleaded gasoline, AAA reports.

While gas prices are known to skyrocket around holidays like Memorial Day weekend when travel rates are higher, local motorists might have seen some mercy at the pump lately. That is, if you’re comparing it to recent times. Monday’s AAA fuel report showed the average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline in Metro Detroit was $3.67, down a few cents from the week before. In Michigan, the average was $3.72 and nearby gas stations in Shelby Township and Utica aren’t far off, around $3.73. The national average of $3.65 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline is down 16 cents from one year ago and down 29 cents from this year’s peak, according to AAA. It is a misconception that gas is more costly than ever before. It is, in fact, lower than it has historically been when compared with the value of commodities such as gold. The true issue is the devaluation of the currency (the dollar has lost 95% of its value since 1913) combined with 30 years of stagnant wages. Things don't cost more we all just make a lot less.   more ›

Gas Prices Pass $4 a Gallon, Not Expected to Hit $5

There will be plenty of pain at the pump this week as gas prices pass the $4 mark and head toward last May's record high, when Michigan's average price per gallon hit $4.26.

The bad news? Gas has passed $4 a gallon in Shelby Township. The good news? AAA says the rumor that prices will hit $5 a gallon this summer is just a myth. On Tuesday, the BP on 26 Mile and Van Dyke topped out Shelby's gas prices at $4.15 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline. The lowest gas price, at $3.83 a gallon, was found at the Kroger pump on 23 Mile and Hayes roads.  While the national average stands at $3.87 per gallon, the state average is right at the $4 mark, and rising, according to MichiganGasPrices.com. While gas will likely remain above $4 a gallon in the near future, the AAA Mid-Atlantic Office, based out of Philadelphia, reports that, "Unless Israel and the United States strike Iran’s nuclear facilities, and then that's the …
