Gas Prices Fall 4 Cents From Last Week, AAA Reports

Prices in the Shelby Township and Utica area have dropped as low as $3.49 a gallon according to Michigan Gas Prices.com.

AAA Michigan is reporting that gasoline prices have fallen roughly 4 cents during the past week to a statewide average of about $3.65 per gallon. The Dearborn-based auto club said Monday that the average price at the pump is about 28 cents per gallon less than last year at this time. Of the cities it surveys, AAA Michigan found the cheapest price for self-serve unleaded fuel is in the Marquette area, at about $3.55 a gallon. The highest average is in the Ann Arbor area, at $3.68 a gallon. What was a dull ache at the pump is quickly becoming an all too familiar pain as gas prices once again creep toward the $4 mark in Shelby Township, Utica and across the country. The average price of around $3.26 Monday was lower than the previous week of approximately $3.28 and down from last month's $3.41. The average gas price was higher last year at this time, hovering around $3.49 in Metro Detroit, the site reports. Relief at the Pump: Gas Prices Falling from Summer Peak

The cheapest gas in Shelby today is $3.90 per gallon, and prices are expected to continue falling in coming weeks.

The average price for a gallon of gas is slowly starting to fall after hitting a seasonal peak of $3.87 on Sept. 14, according to the Wall Street Journal. AAA reports the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $3.79 today; one year ago today, the national average was $3.50 per gallon. “Retail gasoline prices have slowly been drifting lower since we hit a late summer peak of $3.8708 a gallon on Sept. 14,” Tom Kloza, chief oil analyst at the Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), told the Wall Street Journal. He added that gas prices could fall into the $3.70s this week. Tropical Storm Isaac Expected to Cause Steep Increase in Gas Prices

AAA officials have said that Tropical Storm Isaac -- soon expected to become Hurricane Isaac -- may cause gas prices to rise 25 cents a gallon.

Michigan gas prices are expected to hit $4 a gallon soon because of Tropical Storm Issac. The Detroit News reports that a pipeline has been shutdown in Illinois and refinery shutdowns along the Gulf Coast in anticipation of the storm. Officials from AAA have said that Tropical Storm Issac, which is currently ripping across the Gulf of Mexico, will also shut down offshore oil rigs. The National Hurricane Center has predicted that the tropical storm will become a hurricane on Tuesday with 74 to 95 mph winds. It is expected to hit from an area southwest of New Orleans to the edge of Florida's panhandle. The average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Metro Detroit was $3.47 on Monday morning, according to AAA.

Fourth of July travelers are getting a break this year with gas prices taking a dip before the holiday. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in Metro Detroit was $3.47 on Monday morning, down from $3.57 a week ago and $3.77 one year ago. That's good news for drivers who plan to hit the road over the holiday travel period, which AAA defines as Tuesday through Sunday. Gas Prices Pass $4 a Gallon, Not Expected to Hit $5

There will be plenty of pain at the pump this week as gas prices pass the $4 mark and head toward last May's record high, when Michigan's average price per gallon hit $4.26.

The bad news? Gas has passed $4 a gallon in Shelby Township. The good news? AAA says the rumor that prices will hit $5 a gallon this summer is just a myth. On Tuesday, the BP on 26 Mile and Van Dyke topped out Shelby's gas prices at $4.15 for a gallon of unleaded gasoline. The lowest gas price, at $3.83 a gallon, was found at the Kroger pump on 23 Mile and Hayes roads.  While the national average stands at $3.87 per gallon, the state average is right at the $4 mark, and rising, according to MichiganGasPrices.com. Gas Prices Shoot up Toward $4 a Gallon

Prices increase an average of 34 cents a gallon in a week, approaching record highs.

Metro Detroit gasoline prices shot up 34 cents a gallon in a week, running an average of $3.78 a gallon Tuesday vs. $3.44 a week ago, according to AAA Michigan. The best prices found in Shelby Township are $3.66 a gallon for regular gasoline. Other parts of Michigan are paying $4 or more. Increasing world demand for oil is pushing Michigan’s gasoline prices closer to record high territory, said Dustin Coupal is a co-founder of GasBuddy.com.  “Over time, it’s a definite certainty ... whether it happens this week … or next month," Coupal said.
