The Michigan High School Football Coaches Association has selected Eisenhower High School student David Curle as one of 44 players on this year's East Team.
Eisenhower High School senior David Curle has been named one of 88 high school football players to participate in the 33nd annual East-West All Star Game. An offensive and defensive lineman for Ike, Curle will play the latter position on the East Team. Hosted by the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association, the game brings together what are considered to be some of the best players in the state, as selected by a state-wide group of MHSFCA member coaches. Players were announced Jan. 12. This year's game is scheduled to take place Saturday, June 22, at Arend D. Lubbers Stadium on the campus of Grand Valley State University in Allendale, MI. Utica High School kicks off Utica Community Schools High School varsity football season with first game Thursday.
It's that time of year when the cheerleaders emerge and the fresh football teams energetically burst onto the field: High school football season. Utica High School will kick off the varsity season with the first game Aug. 23 against Rochester at Rochester's home field. Most night games begin at 7 p.m. Eisenhower High's first game will be against Port Huron at Wayne State University at 1:30 p.m. Homecoming for both Utica and Eisnhower will be Sept. 28. Eisenhower's football practice season kicked off Monday under new head coach Chris Smith.
Eisenhower, along with more than 600 teams throughout the state, kicked off the first official day of football practice season Monday. One noticeable difference is that former Coach Bob Lantzy, who had lead the team for 42 years, was not on the sidelines. Lantzy retired after last season and 304 football victories, according to the Detroit News. He was replaced by assistant coach Chris Smith. Smith has taken two former Eisenhower assistants -- quarterback coach Terry Copacia and offensive line coach Chris Layson -- with him. Eisenhower's first football game will be Aug. 23.
Macomb County's elected officials took on Crusader coaches and alumni Sunday night as part of the school's Midnight Madness kickoff to the 2012 football season.
The game may or may not have been rigged, but it was Team Hackel for the win when Macomb County elected officials took on L'Anse Creuse North coaches and alumni Sunday night in a fund-raiser game for the Crusaders 2012 football season. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Macomb County Commissioner Bob Smith were only a few of the county officials to participate in the school's first-ever Midnight Madness celebration. "It was one of my weaker moments," Hackel joked of agreeing to play in the game. Number of member schools charging participation fees holds steady, MHSAA survey shows.
The fall high school athletic season is right around the corner and with that comes the pay to participate fees. So, how do the rates in Shelby and Utica compare with other communities? The Michigan High School Athletic Association surveyed its member institutions recently and revealed that although the use of participation fees to help fund interscholastic athletics has doubled during the last nine years, the percentage of schools accessing them has held steady over the last two. The survey indicates that of the 514 schools participating, 260 of them - 50.5 percent - charged participation fees last school year. Athletes from Utica and Eisenhower high schools competed at the Division 1 state track and field finals on Saturday at East Kentwood. Freddie Crittenden of Utica placed third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.93 seconds to earn all-state recognition. Mike Kwasnik of Eisenhower finished seventh in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.911 seconds Joe Engel of Utica finished eighth in the shot put to earn all-state honors. He had a toss of 52 feet, 5.5 inches. Utica's 3,200-meter relay team of Chris Scott, Zac Freeland, James Abbey and Glen Scott finished eight with a time of 7:57.49.

Utica's Davina Nguyen wins state championship at No. 1 singles.
Davina Nguyen of Utica High School won the state championship at No. 1 singles at the Division 1 tennis finals at Midland on Saturday, according to the MHSAA. Nguyen defeated Clarkston’s Katie Brozovich 7-6, 7-5 in the final to win the state title. Nguyen did not lose a set in winning four matches at the tournament. She defeated Mary Hanna of Saline—the top seed entering the tournament—7-5, 6-4 in the semifinals.

The Eisenhower lacrosse team kicks off its season today with a special dedication to Cassie Hines.
The Eisenhower lacrosse teams will play their first games of the season Saturday with the same determination in their eyes, but this time, they won't be just playing for the sheer glory of a win. "The season definitely has more behind it because we're actually playing for more than just a trophy," said one of three team captains, Tony Giacona. The varsity team has dedicated the entire season to goalie Ethan Hines' sister, Cassie Hines, who recently lost her 4-year battle with cancer. Cassie Hines was a student at Eisenhower High School when she was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of kidney cancer. She died March 1, 2012, at the age of 21.
