Eagles junior Charlie Myers wins regional championship; Falcons David Skochelak and Connor McDill take second places to earn spot in state tournament.
HARRISON TOWNSHIP – Eisenhower junior Charlie Myers had his sights on a regional title. He wasn’t going to go home empty-handed. Myers battled Rochester senior Cody DeVoe in the 171-pound finals on Saturday at the individual wrestling regionals at L’Anse Creuse. Their match went into the fourth tie-breaker period, where Myers escaped to neutral to win the decision 3-2. “There was no way I was going to be held down,” Myers said. “In my head, I said all you got to do is get out of here.” The intensity grew with each overtime period, and each of the two wrestlers was mindful not to make mistakes in the early rounds. The two had wrestled earlier this season, with DeVoe coming out on top. This time, Myers didn’t let DeVoe hit any offense. “(A …

Eagles will play Port Huron at Wayne State on Aug. 25.
Chris Smith’s debut as the head coach of the Eisenhower High School football team will come on a big stage against a familiar foe. Eisenhower will begin the 2012 high school football season by taking on Port Huron in the Detroit Sports Commission Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University on Saturday, Aug. 25, according to a press release. Eisenhower advanced to last year’s Division 1 state semifinals. Smith, who was named head coach after the retirement of Bob Lantzy, will lead the Eagles against Port Huron. The Big Reds defeated Eisenhower in the 2011 regular season. This year, Eisenhower and Port Huron will meet at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 25 at Tom Adams Field in Wayne State. Longtime assistant Chris Smith tapped as new Eisenhower head coach.
For decades, the sidelines at Eisenhower High School have belonged to one man—head football coach, Bob Lantzy. He built a storied and winning tradition at the Shelby Township school since the program’s inception, and he shaped the Eagles into one of the state’s elite teams. In 2012, however, the sidelines will belong to another man—new Ike coach Chris Smith. The longtime Eagles’ assistant coach took over the reins in 2012 and did it with a load of enthusiasm. “I am very excited about the opportunity,” Smith said. “This is a premier program, in a great school, with great people, in a great community. How can I not be excited about that?” To the Ike fans in the community, Smith has been a familiar face for the past 15 years, serving as an …

Offense sputters against Detroit Cass Tech in 6-3 loss on a windy Saturday afternoon.
The wind blew hard, very hard, Sarturday afternoon, making it very difficult for either team to throw the ball effectively. The difference, however, was Cass Tech's ability to run the ball when it needed to, while Eisenhower simply couldn't get any ground attack going. The result was a heartbreaking, 6-3, season-ending loss for the Eagles in the Division 1 state semifinals. Ike had its share of chances, however, including a drive late in the fourth quarter. As was the case for the majority of the contest, the Technicians defense was stout, thwarting the drive and sending the Eagles home one game shy of the Division 1 state finals. All the game's scoring came in the opening half of play. The Eagles took advantage of a bothced Cass Tech punt…

If the Eagles win, they will advance to the state finals at Ford Field on Nov. 26. Eisenhower is gunning for its fifth trip to the state championship game and its first since 2003. The Technicians are 9-3 overall, and they are led by running back Royce Jenkins Stone, a University of Michigan recruit. Eisenhower, the champion of the MAC Red Division, is 11-1 overall.
