Share your holiday giving stories with Patch readers.
The holiday giving season wafts through the air in Shelby Township, much like the scent of fresh brewed coffee at Biggby. While working from the Biggby Coffee on 21 and Hayes Road, I happened to look up in time to catch an adorable 8-year-old drop several toys into a bin for underprivileged kids. The smile that beamed on her face as she dropped the unwrapped presents into the box could have lit the entire coffee shop for a week. Julia Weihs' mom told Patch they have been wanting to drop off toys all week and finally got around to it Tuesday. "It feels like I am giving something to someone, so they have stuff like I have," said the Collins Elementary School student. Random acts of kindness like this are in abudance during the holiday …

As the Editor of the Shelby-Utica Patch, I want to thank the community for helping me make the site a success. Now, here's a list of my Top 10 Most Memorable Moments with Patch.
While it's been just over a year since I launched the Shelby-Utica Patch, Dec. 23 to be exact, I have met so many wonderful people, covered great triumphs for our little Macomb County jewels and had a blast doing it. I have tackled so many issues in the past year from the rollercoaster ride of Shelby Township politics to literally a rollercoaster ride down one of the world's largest inflatable slides at Stony Creek. As a journalist and editor, there are just some stories that I have to run to get information out to the public because that's my job. But then, there are those stories that get me so excited I can't stop talking about it to my friends and family and for whatever reason—be it fun, or the experience of meeting an incredible …

Learn more about the history and meaning behind this Jewish holiday, which starts tonight at sundown.
While Christmas is among the top two Christian holidays in terms of importance, Hanukkah is considered a minor holiday for the Jewish people. Nevertheless, it has become one of the more widely celebrated Jewish holidays and is certainly a favorite among children. Hanukkah commemorates the victory of the Jews over the Syrian Greeks in 164 BCE (Before Common Era) and is celebrated by lighting one additional candle in a candelabrum, called a hanukkiah (or menorah) for eight days. The holiday is also known as the Festival of Lights. Hanukkah means rededication and refers to the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its defilement by the Syrian Greeks in 164 BCE (or BC). As the website MyJewishLearning.com notes, "Beginning in 167 BCE…

All-star team of professional bodybuilders and aerobic instructors open new weight training facility in Shelby Township.
Now that we’re officially in the thick of the holiday weight gain season, with Thanksgiving behind us, and a full month of holiday parties to go, three highly qualified trainers and a fresh workout routine may come in handy. The Ken Jackson Fitness Factory, owned by a professional body builder, a former Miss Michigan Bodybuilder and a professional dancer and choreographer, can help you sweat off the average 5 to 7 pounds Americans usually gain during the six-week period between Thanksgiving and New Year's. “The Ultimate Training Facility,” as it says on a gigantic spray-painted mural that spans the length of gym’s back wall, opened in August 2011 inside of a 10,500-square foot industrial facility on West Star Road off Schoenherr Road …

The Day of Atonement is the most solemn and holiest day on the Jewish calendar.
Here are five things you should know about Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement holiday that begins on Tuesday evening and concludes 25 hours later on Wednesday night. Yom Kippur is the most solemn and holiest day on the Jewish calendar. It is also known as the “Sabbath of Sabbaths” because of its magnitude. In fact, it is such an important holiday that it can even occur on the Jewish Sabbath (as it does this year), making it the only time that fasting is allowed on the Sabbath. This Day of Atonement occurs on the tenth day of the first month of the Jewish calendar, rounding out the Days of Awe from Rosh Hashanah. Due to its popularity, you’ll notice local synagogue parking lots at full capacity on Yom Kippur, although many observant …
