Elderly Man Collapses While Shoveling Snow in Shelby Township

Firefighters responded to the man Saturday in the Shelby Road and 22 Mile area.

An elderly Shelby Township man collapsed Saturday morning while shoveling snow in the community, fire officials said. The man, believed to be in his 70s, was using a snow blower at the time. Emergency responders rushed to his home in the Shelby Road and 22 Mile area and immediately performed CPR. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, according to the fire department. Battalion Chief John McCoy said they are awaiting word from the hospital about whether the man would prevail. Check back with Patch for updates.

Utica Artist's Work to be Displayed in New St. Joseph Mercy Oakland South Tower

The new St. Joseph Mercy Oakland South Patient Tower will display the works of 84 Michigan artists.

Utica resident Suzanne M. Johnson was one of 84 artists selected to provide artwork for the new St. Joseph Mercy Oakland (SJMO) South Patient Tower.  The new eight-story tower will have 208 technologically enhanced, private patient rooms. It's scheduled to open in 2014. A callout in this spring by SJMO asked artists to submit artwork that represents peace and healing through nature or water and landscapes. The SJMO arts program is aimed at creating an experience that heals bodies, nurtures souls and comforts hearts, according to SJMO. More than 225 artists from throughout Michigan applied to have their artwork considered.  However, only 85 artists were selected.
