A spring freeze has resulted in the lightest apple crop since 1945, raising prices on apples and apple products at businesses like Blake's Orchard and Cider Mill, Achatz Pies and Kroger.
This fall, an apple a day may cost a bit more. Apple prices have gone up after a spring freeze resulted in the lightest apple crop in the state since 1945, said Pete Blake, co-owner of Blake’s Orchard and Cider Mill in Armada. A week of 90-degree temperatures in March caused the trees to bloom early. Then, a series of cold April nights killed those apple blossoms. “The trees are still fine for next year, but it takes the crop for this year,” Blake said. Macomb-area stores like Kroger, Biggby and Achatz Handmade Pie Co. have also been affected by the crop shortage. They say they too will have to raise prices and ship in apples from out of state. Blake’s was able to harvest 20-25 percent of their apple crop this season, expecting about 10,…

As Kroger customer communications representative, Dave Hollandsworth, explains, there are three components to the new campaign: promote local brands through Pure Michigan, work with Michigan State University’s Product Center to bring smaller brands to Kroger shelves and clearly identify those products that are “Michigan Made" throughout the store. “In some cases, I have felt almost …

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved Meijer's plan to build a gas station in the parking lot of the Hall Road and Hayes location.
Meijer shoppers at Hall Road and Hayes will soon be able to fill their gas tanks after loading their shopping carts with food. The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved a special land use request by Meijer to allow the Michigan-based grocery store chain to add a fueling station and convenience store in the parking lot of the exiting Hall Road site. The board agreed to grant Meijer the permits needed to begin construction on the new fueling station on the basis that the new building will be consistent with the predominately retail development pattern along Hall Road; there are no abutting residents that would be impacted; there is sufficient land at the site to accommodate the influx of traffic; and the site plan provides safe and …

There will be no discounted gas stations on the southeast corner of 25 Mile and Dequindre roads after the Shelby Township Board of Trustees voted against Kroger’s request to build a gas station in the parking lot of the present store. “I have shopped many, many times and parking is always a problem … I am really opposed to this gas station,” said Clerk Terri Kowal. At Tuesday’s Board meeting, cheers erupted in the crowd when the board unanimously voted down the mega store’s request to build a 12 pump station. “I know what this corner looks like and I know the safety issue is way up there,” said Shelby Township resident Ron Churchill. “I commend this board for finally once having a head on your shoulders. “ Another resident raised safety …
