C.J. Barrymore’s Adds Bumper Cars, Mini-Bowling to Indoor Fun

The latest renovations to the Hall Road entertainment center have been designed to enhance the venue's year-round appeal.

With its go-karts, mini-golf and water games, C.J. Barrymore’s is a popular summertime retreat, but renovations now underway look to make the Hall Road venue a year-round entertainment center. Owner Rick Iceberg said he hopes this latest expansion, which includes electric bumper cars, mini-bowling and new arcade games, will increase the venue’s wintertime appeal. “It’s one more thing,” Iceberg said of the renovations. “We’re trying to expand our winter business. We have so much in the summer, but the bumper cars are another indoor game.” This most recent addition, scheduled to open at the end of February, is yet another piece in Iceberg’s plans to diversify his company’s entertainment offerings. “You have to change,” Iceberg said. “…

It's literally bowling in miniature. The lane is shorter and the ball is about the size of a grapefruit. Rules are the same, I believe. It's more geared toward children and those who may have trouble playing the slightly more strenuous full-size version (back problems, seniors, etc.).   more ›

Michigan Wine Lovers Venture into Vino Biz, Open Tasting Room in Shelby Township

Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room, located at 45645 Hayes, north of Hall Road, offers around 30 varieties of local wine, cheese and chocolates at any given time.

From Rieslings infused with hints of green apple to rich Merlot-Cabernet blends, Cortney and Shannon Casey are passionate about Michigan wine and have now poured their heart, soul and savings into the industry they love. The Macomb Township couple first ventured into the vino business in 2009 with MichiganByTheBottle.com, a website promoting the Michigan wine industry, and for the past year, they have worked to turn their part-time hobby into a full-time career. They finally achieved that goal in December 2012, opening Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room in Shelby Township. “The whole idea behind having a tasting room in Metro Detroit was that most of the population of Michigan is in this area, but most of the wineries are hours away,” …

Review of the Week: Steiny's Tavern

Do you have something to say about a restaurant or business in Shelby Township and Utica? Then rate it and review it on Patch.

Fran Stout recently reviewed Steiny’s Tavern on Shelby-Utica Patch. Here’s what she said about Steiny’s Tavern: “Had a truly wonderful Mother's Day dinner at Steiny's Tavern--the 6 of us all enjoyed our food; couldn't believe the size of the burger! "Steiny Sauce" was the perfect accompaniment to the pulled pork. My MIL really enjoyed the fish and chips w/ the thin coating and my husband LOVED the ribs. The portions were large and the prices were reasonable. The waitress was attentive and the manager stopped by to check on us a few times. We will be back!” Do you have a favorite restaurant or business in Shelby Township and Utica? Then rate it and review it on Patch.

Local Mom Looks to Open 'Play-Place for Autistic Children' on Hall Road

Inspired by her son, a local woman is working to build a recreation center in Macomb County for children and families with special needs, specifically those with autism. A friend-raiser for the facility will be held April 21 at Lutheran North.

With a little luck and a great deal of community support, Hall Road could be home to the state’s first recreational facility for children with autism as early as March 2013. Play-Place for Autistic Children, or PAC, is the brainchild of Shelby Township resident Shell Jones, whose son Duane, now 9, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 ½. “My son loved Disney and Chuck E. Cheese's, but as a mom I was observant that people weren’t always sensitive to his challenges,” Jones said. “I needed a place where I could take him that he would feel comfortable and people would understand, OK, he’s having a meltdown, but he will eventually come out of this and resume play.” Working with Dr. Rick Solomon, the medical director of the Ann Arbor Center for …
