Rush hour traffic on southbound M-53 is being diverted off the expressway at 26 Mile due to an accident. WWJ-Radio is reporting there was an accident at 2:45 p.m. Tuesday between 24 and 23 Mile, which led to closure. Traffic can enter southbound M-53 at 23 Mile, according to Shelby Township dispatch. Northbound traffic is slow from M-59 to 23 Mile according to map on WWJ.com. Update: As of 6 p.m. Tuesday, the accident was cleared and traffic is flowing clearly. Shelby Township police said Monday they are investigating the death as a suicide.
A badly decomposed body discovered Friday afternoon in Shelby Township has been in the wooded area since June, township police said Monday. "There's a lot of foliage and once the leaves dropped, it became apparent to motorists going by," Police Chief Roland Woelkers told Patch. "It appears to be a potential suicide," Woelkers said, noting preliminary findings show no signs of foul play. The body was hanging from a tree near the M-53 expressway and 23 Mile Road. A motorist notified police after spotting something suspicious in the woodland near a strip of land where builders have been clearing trees to make way for development.
