1st Massage Center in Shelby Township To Open Since Restrictions Lifted

LaVida Massage will open its doors today to the chain's newest location in Shelby Township.

After succeeding in convincing Shelby Township to reverse a two decade-old restriction on opening massage parlors in the township, LaVida Massage will open today inside the Crossing Shopping Center on Hall and Schoenherr roads. In March, the Shelby Township Board of Trustees loosened restrictions on massage parlors in the township after an ordinance in the 1990s was passed to prevent prostitution at massage establishments. The new ordinance paved the way for the 3,000 square foot massage center, which will feature 11 massage rooms, one dedicated esthetics/facial room and one spray tanning room. Shelby Loosens Restrictions on Massage Parlors after Decades Old Prostitution Allegations

A change in the way Shelby Township does business with massage parlors has opened the doors for more massage parlors to open in Shelby Township.

The Shelby Township Board of Trustees is loosening restrictions on massage parlors in the Township after an ordinance in the 1990s was passed to prevent prostitution at massage establishments. Township Attorney Rob Huth said the industry has changed in the past 20 years, but in the early 90s, there was a high-profile case involving allegations of prostitution at a Shelby Township massage parlor.  “There were allegations of prostitution at several massage parlors,” he added.  For many years, the ordinance stated massages had to be done as an accessory to another business, such as a salon or doctor’s office.
