Road Work Underway on Van Dyke

Crews began construction project on Van Dyke this week from Utica city limits to 23 Mile in Shelby Township.

A new road project started this week on Van Dyke between the Utica limits and 23 Mile in Shelby Township. The project, which began May 13, is starting with the lane closures for the lowering of the locations of drainage structures, according to the Shelby Township Facebook page.  It will also includes the milling and removal of the existing asphalt, before a new layer of asphalt is added. The project is scheduled to be completed July 1.  Additionally, the township is reporting 21 Mile over M5-3 will be closed May 17 to May 27 to allow the Michigan Department of Transportation to resurface the bridge. Traffic will be detoured north to 22 Mile via Van Dyke and Schoenherr.

M-53 Overpass Repair in Shelby Township to Start Friday

The Michigan Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin overpass repair above M-53 Friday in Shelby Township.

Motorists can expect lane and overpass closures along the Van Dyke Freeway starting Friday as the Michigan Department of Transportation begins a $1.2 million overpass repair project.  There will be staggered, weekday single-lane closures along M-53 to accommodate rush-hour traffic, according to an MDOT release. Macomb County Drivers Expect Groesbeck Delays

Utility work will take place over this weekend on the main road, according to Michigan Department of Transportation.

Macomb County motorists can expect delays this weekend on Groesbeck, as construction will prompt lane closures. According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, northbound and southbound Groesbeck Highway will have single- and double-lane closures between 13 Mile and Utica roads beginning 5 a.m. Saturday until 5 a.m. Monday for utility work. Thousands of Michigan Crashes Highlight Need for Work-Zone Safety Awareness

There were more than 4,000 accidents last year in work zones across the state, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

Slowing down, concentrating and adhering to roadside warnings could help prevent thousands of accidents in Michigan work zones. Michigan Department of Transportation released sobering statistics Wednesday during National Work Zone Awareness Week. Last year, there were 4,530 crashes, 1,149 injuries, and 15 fatalities in Michigan work zones compared to 4,633 crashes, 1,312 injuries and 18 fatalities in 2011, according to MDOT. "Crashes were down across the board for 2012 but too many people are still at risk of serious injury and death," State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said in a prepared statement. MDOT: Work Taking Place at I-94, I-696 Interchange

Crews are fixing a drainage structure in the left lane.

The Interstate 94 and Interstate 696 interchange has gone down to one lane as crews repair a faulty drainage structure, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation. The work in Macomb County means the left lane of the existing two-lane ramp from I-94 to westbound I-696 will be shut down for at least one week. Crews are fixing the drainage structure in the left lane. The right lane of the ramp is expected to remain open during the repair, MDOT said.

Volunteers to Clean Up Along Local Highways

Freeway roadsides in the Metro Detroit area are scheduled for cleanup in mid-April.

Volunteers will give local freeway roadsides some TLC this month in Southeastern Michigan. As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation Adopt-A-Highway program, the helpers--wearing bright vests as a safety precaution--will pick up trash from April 13 to 21. It is the first of other scheduled cleanups across the state. "The spirit of Adopt-A-Highway volunteers is Pure Michigan," State Transportation Director Kirk T. Steudle said in a prepared statement. "They keep our roadsides looking great, and help MDOT direct its limited resources to fixing our roads." MDOT Shows Local Motorists Map of Routes Online

Drivers can find which routes to avoid across the state through the Michigan Department of Transportation website.

Before hitting the roads this weekend, local motorists can plan their best routes through a Michigan Department of Transportation interactive map. Mi Drive allows users to explore closures and construction across the state, including the Macomb County area, through its website. It also reflects live traffic incidents like accidents on major freeways like I-696 and I-94 in southeastern Michigan.

MDOT Launches Blog to Share, Chat With Metro Detroiters

#MetroMerge will allow residents and MDOT to interact on transportation issues.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has launched a new blog to allow residents to talk about transportation issues. The blog, #MetroMerge, is MDOT's hope to increase outreach to residents of MDOT's Metro Region, which includes Macomb, Oakland, St. Clair and Wayne counties.
