Michigan Wine Lovers Venture into Vino Biz, Open Tasting Room in Shelby Township

Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room, located at 45645 Hayes, north of Hall Road, offers around 30 varieties of local wine, cheese and chocolates at any given time.

From Rieslings infused with hints of green apple to rich Merlot-Cabernet blends, Cortney and Shannon Casey are passionate about Michigan wine and have now poured their heart, soul and savings into the industry they love. The Macomb Township couple first ventured into the vino business in 2009 with MichiganByTheBottle.com, a website promoting the Michigan wine industry, and for the past year, they have worked to turn their part-time hobby into a full-time career. They finally achieved that goal in December 2012, opening Michigan By The Bottle Tasting Room in Shelby Township. “The whole idea behind having a tasting room in Metro Detroit was that most of the population of Michigan is in this area, but most of the wineries are hours away,” …

Taco Bell at Corner of Hall and Romeo Plank Opens for Fourth Meal Business

The new location opened on Monday, Dec. 2, and will serve customers from 10 a.m to 4 a.m. seven days a week.

If you find yourself craving that "fourth meal," you can now add the northeast corner of Romeo Plank and Hall Road to your list of Taco Bell locations. Macomb Township's newest fast food restaurant opened its doors Monday, Dec. 3. The township approved construction of the franchise in fall 2011, but Taco Bell didn't break ground on the new location until August of this year. The lot on which Taco Bell now sits formerly housed a BP gas station, which had been vacant for more than a year when Taco Bell announced its plans for the property. The restaurant is open 10 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, with the drive-thru open from 10 a.m. to 4 a.m. seven days as well. New Shelby Township Pizzeria Puts Eastern European Twist on Chicago-Style Pizza

Fred's Pizza opens in Shelby Township.

Father and son Erion and Fred Gjysma have brought their own spin on the Chicago-Style pizza to Shelby Township. The father and son duo opened Fred’s Pizza on 24 and Hayes less than a month ago. Headlining the new pizzeria is their infamous two-layered “Chicago-style stuffed” pizza. “It has three times the amount of cheese that a normal pizza has,” said Erion Gjysma. Erion Gjysma said he didn’t want to copy traditional Chicago-Style pizza. “We wanted to make it our own.” And, make it their own they did. Fred's Chicago-style stuffed pizza was inspired by their homeland – Albania. “Byrek” is a stuffed pie that is very popular in Eastern European cuisine, said Erion Gjysma. However, the dough used in Byrek is softer and flakier. The father and…

New Patty Cakes Bakery Popular with Sweet-Toothed Adults

Patty Duggar is living out her sweet retirement dreams in the kitchen of Shelby's newest bakery.

Patty Cakes, Shelby Township’s newest bakery, has four bakers’ women. The owner, whose name is actually Patty, had a little fun with the bakery’s name, playing off the old English nursery rhymes, before she decided that times have changed and enlisted the help of four bakers’ women. Patty Duggar, a retired Utica Community Schools special education teacher, opened the bakery on 23 Mile Road and M-53, right in front of the Wal-Mart with the hopes of baking fresh goodies that have always been a family favorite. Duggar, a Shelby Township resident who is originally from the south, noticed the city was in need of a good ol’ fashioned bakery that specialized in homemade cupcakes, banana pudding pies and cakes. Duggar and her three cake decorators…
