Federal prosecutors pursuing extortion charges against Giuseppe D’Anna and Girolamo D’Anna say the Shelby Township brothers are a 'danger to the community' given their alleged mafia connections.
The federal case against two brothers convicted last year of brutally beating a fellow Shelby Township restaurant owner has taken an international turn as prosecutors now say the men have ties to an alleged mafia boss in the family’s native Sicily. Giuseppe "Joe" D’Anna, 60, and Girolamo "Mimmo" D’Anna, 48, were indicted last week by a federal grand jury on three counts of extortion, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. Owners of the former Tirami Su restaurant in Shelby Township have been indicted by a federal grand jury on extortion charges.
The Shelby Township restaurant owner and his brother convicted last year of beating a competitor with a baseball bat are heading back to court after a federal grand jury indicted them on charges of allegedly extorting the same individual. In an indictment unsealed Thursday, Giuseppe "Joe" D’Anna, 60, and Girolamo "Mimmo" D’Anna, 48, were charged with one count of Hobbs Act conspiracy and two counts of attempted Hobbs Act extortion, each of which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice. The restaurant plans to add new items to its menu and offer beer, wine and alcohol when it reopens.
Fans of Nonna's Italian Kitchen will have to look elsewhere for their pasta this week as the restaurant plans to close its doors temporarily for remodeling. Nonna's will be closed Monday, Jan. 28, through Sunday, Feb. 3. While crews work to give the restaurant a new look, the kitchen will be perfecting several new menu items, according to Nonna's Facebook page. Approved for a Class C liquor license in August 2012, Nonna's began serving beer, wine and liquor on Jan. 26 and will continue to do so when the restaurant reopens Feb. 4. Nonna's is located at 50528 Schoenherr Rd. in Shelby Township.

Shelby Township Board of Trustees says it only has six liquor licenses left to dole out for the next ten years.
The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved a liquor license for Nonna’s Italian Kitchen, but denied new Mediterranean restaurant Kayla Sky Inc. a liquor license. Vice President of the Sterling Heights Chamber of Commerce Ron Current told the Board that Kayla Sky needed a liquor license in order to compete with restaurants along Van Dyke. “They’ve done a good job of making this not trashy and family friendly. I hope you reconsider,” he said. Without any debate, the Board approved a Class C License for Nonna’s, which has been open for more than three years. Owners of the former Tirami Su restaurant in Shelby Township pleaded guilty today to lesser charges in the beating of a competitor.
A Shelby Township restaurateur and his brother accused of brutally beating his competitor pleaded guilty Thursday in Macomb County Circuit Court to greatly reduced charges, according to the Macomb Daily. The brothers, Giuseppe D'Anna, 59, and Girolamo D'Anna, 46, of Shelby Township, who own the Tiramisu Italian Ristorante, were facing the possibility of up to life in prison after prosecutors said they hit Pietro Ventimiglia, 35, owner of nearby restaurant Nonna’s Italian Kitchen, in the head numerous times with a baseball bat on April 28. A preliminary exam for two brothers accused of brutally beating a restaurant owner with a bat and threatening to kill his family and employees has been postponed. The exam, which was originally scheduled for Monday in 41-A District Court in Shelby Township before Judge Douglas Shepherd, has been rescheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, according to court officials.
