Au Revoir Shelby-Utica Patch

Signing off on my last day as the Shelby-Utica Patch editor.

This will be my final post as the Shelby-Utica Patch Editor.  As of tomorrow, I will be hitting the open road to start a new chapter in my life. I am moving to the Windy City to pursue a graduate degree in journalism from Northwestern University. A little over two years ago, Patch expanded its coverage territory to Michigan and I had the pleasure of launching the Shelby-Utica Patch website. Since then, It's been a wild ride - literally. I have gone from refueling fighter jets in mid-air to learning how to shoot a handgun, getting chased out of a smoke shop by three men after I asked if they sold K2, and happening to be an eye-witness of a small brawl on election day between candidates and an outspoken blogger.  Patch has taught me a lot …

Snyder Vetoes Bill That Would Have Allowed Guns in Schools

The bill would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones such as schools and sports arenas.

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder has vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed weapons into public schools and sports arena, according to a report on Michigan Public Radio. The Michigan Legislature passed Senate Bill 59 late last week that would have allowed concealed weapons in gun-free zones, but in the wake of the school shooting in Newtown, CT, many had called for Snyder to veto the legislation. David Hecker, Michigan President of American Federation of Teachers (AFT) said in a Friday statement, "We’re aghast that this lame duck legislature thinks it’s a good idea to put MORE guns in our schools, let alone places of worship or sports arenas...The House passed SB 59 on Thursday. How dare these lame duck legislators put the safety of …

I am very disappointed in Governor Snyders decision to veto this bill. The NRA worked very hard to get this law passed. There was an enormous amount of pressure brought on Governor Snyder, so I can understand why he would change his mind at the last second. Hopefully, the Michigan Legislature can re-introduce a revised bill which will change the Governors mind. We can only hope!   more ›

Children Are Hungry in Shelby Township and Utica: Here's How You Can Help

More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan don't get enough to eat, negatively impacting health, learning and more.

In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. Nearly half the people Gleaners Community Food Bank helps—at least 40 percent— are children younger than 18. Sadly, that need is far from being filled. Gleaners actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting a five-county area— Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne—in southeast Michigan. It provides 45 million pounds of food each year to Michigan’s hungry via its 600 partner food pantries, schools, soup kitchens, shelters and nonprofits. More than 7,500 Utica Community Schools students receive free or reduced lunches this school year, according to UCS Representative Tim McAvoy…

Patch Can Help You Save Money on Groceries

New feature helps you find grocery specials in stores nearby.

Patch has launched a new section in our sites designed to help you save money. Similar to the printed weekly circulars found in stores and in newspapers, the new section allows readers to search for hundreds of grocery specials by local store and product category. Among the benefits: To get started, go to the home page and click on the “Start Saving” button on the  “Grocery Specials” advertisement on the right side of the page. Or use the top blue navigation bar, move your cursor to the "More stuff" link and scroll down to and click on the "Grocery Specials" link. It's that easy. Grocery savings are now at your fingerstips. It's one more way that Patch is working to make life ridiculously easy for readers.
