U.S. Postal Service to Drop Saturday Mail in August

The Associated Press reports the move will save about $2 billion and will not affect package delivery to homes like those in Shelby Township and Utica.

The U.S. Postal Service will stop delivering mail on Saturdays starting Aug. 5, Postmaster General Patrick R. Donahoe said Wednesday.  The move, which does not affect package delivery or post office boxes, is expected to save $2 billion annually. It's part of a 5-year plan to cut $20 billion, according to The Washington Post.  On Tuesday, The Huffington Post reported that Hallmark Cards, Inc. has hired lobbyists who will ask Congress to keep Saturday delivery and consider other cost-saving measures. According to the report, postal workers say the move could result in the loss of 80,000 jobs.  For local residents, it could mean a delay in the delivery of newspapers, Netflix movies and bills.
