Looking for ways to give back to the Shelby Township and Utica community this spring? The Macomb County Community Services Agency is in need of volunteer drivers to deliver meals to homebound senior citizens on Easter Sunday, March 31. Volunteers are needed in all Macomb County communities, and asked to deliver a route of approximately 10 to 12 meals. Those interested in delivering meals must register by Friday, March 1. Macomb County will host a drug take-back and shredding event Oct. 18 at Freedom Hill to help local seniors, age 60 and older, properly dispose of medications and keep their personal information safe.
Macomb County senior citizens can dispose of unwanted medications and sensitive personal information for free Thursday at a document-shredding and medication-collection event at Freedom Hill in Sterling Heights. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at Freedom Hill County Park, 115000 Metropolitan Pkwy, east of Schoenherr. The event, which in the past has been held at the Verkuilen Building in Clinton Township, was moved this year to accomodate the increased traffic. Once again the Macomb County Senior Citizen Services Department is partnering with Absolute Shreds, a mobile shredding company, to shred any unwanted personal documents for area seniors. The Aug. 4 program wasn’t so much a focus on the scams themselves, but rather an introduction to the local offices seniors can use to report or prosecute these crimes.
True or false? Older adults are deliberately targeted for telemarketing fraud. With at least one story a day on the news dealing with “senior scams,” little doubt can be had that the above statement is undeniably true. While scams don’t have an age limit, seniors were the focus of the Safe, Sound and Secure program Thursday at the MISD. Hosted by Macomb County Senior Citizen Services, the program featured local officials such as County Executive Mark Hackel and Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, as well as those who deal with crimes against seniors on a daily basis, such as Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith, Assistant Prosecuting Attorney in the Chief Senior Crime Unit Suzanne Faunce and victim advocate Chris Misuraca. The annual golf outing raises money for local high school seniors including 11 seniors graduating this month.
Tee it up for education was the theme for the Shelby Community Foundation's annual Golf Outing Wednesday. The annual fund raiser is the largest event the group hosts to raise money for scholarships for local high school graduates. Eleven graduates were each presented with $1,000 scholarships this year. "It's so important to stand behind our children." said foundation chairperson Theresa Toia. Toia and Kathy Vallis chaired the golf event coordinating 17 foursomes. The day included 18 holes of golf at Cherry Creek Golf Club, a spectacular lunch and dinner, raffles, prizes, hole sponsorships, and contest prizes.
