At 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, Shelby Township paid tribute to the victims of Sept. 11, 2001.
Residents and elected officials gathered outside the Shelby Township Municipal Offices on Sunday to remember those who lost their lives in the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001. With the city's fire trucks and police cars nearby, Phil Randazzo, Shelby Township Veterans Event Coordinator, gave the signal at 1 p.m. to symbolize the start of the siren soundoff. For one full minute, those gathered, joined the rest of the nation, in uniting together and remembering those who gave their lives to protect our freedoms.

Some experienced the tragic loss of a loved one, some found an inspiring way to help those who were grieving, and others experienced a political awakening. There will be a national moment of remembrance at 1 p.m.; many Metro Detroit communities are participating. 9/11 Remembrance & Candlelight Vigil at the Capitol: The Michigan State Police, Emergency Management & Homeland Security Division will hold a 9/11 Remembrance & Candlelight Vigil from 7-9 p.m. on the East Lawn of the Capitol Building in Lansing. First responders are encouraged to attend in uniform. The Capitol is located at 100 N. Capitol Ave. The Metroparks and CBC Detroit Radio are holding a special rememberance for 9/11 to honor victims and thank protectors. Macomb County will add its own events to the statewide celebration planned for Patriot Week.
Anchored between two key dates in American history–the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and the signing of the U.S. Constitution on Sept. 17– Patriot Week was created in 2009 in an effort to "renew the spirit of America." Macomb County officials voted to join the celebration this year by proclaiming Sept. 11-17 Patriot Week in the county and organizing a series of local events to mark the holiday. “It is important to be reminded of the principles our nation was founded upon,” said Kathy D.
