Shelby Martial Arts Academy owner and Center for Learning Through Rhythm and Movement founder Richard Bole has spent the last 15 years helping children diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and autism gain focus through exercise.
When Richard Bole looks into the eyes of a child with autism or ADD, he doesn’t see that child’s “special needs,” but rather the wealth of intelligence and creativity he or she has yet to unlock. The founder of the Center for Learning Through Rhythm and Movement and owner of the Shelby Martial Arts Academy, Bole has dedicated the past 15 years of his life to helping children diagnosed with ADD, ADHD and autism use exercise to gain focus, coordination and self-fulfillment. “It’s extremely fulfilling,” the 67-year-old Bole said of his work with the CLTRM. “I’ve seen what (these exercises) can do. I look into their eyes and see the intelligence of these kids. If we can get the brain working as one unit, as it is designed, these kids can be …

Patch.com is celebrating the Shelby Township mom's 1st anniversary blogging for us. Here's a look back at some of her most popular blogs.
It’s been a busy year for Patch.com blogger Erin Ronyane Youngblood. She has managed to juggle working full-time and raising her two young children -- one of which is a special needs child -- all while documenting her triumphs and tribulations of life and motherhood. For the past year, every week like clockwork, Youngblood has uploaded refreshingly honest blogs about her family. “Writing is a form of therapy and I have gained confidence and a real sense of pride when I hear from so many about how much my family's story means to them,” Youngblood told Patch. “I have found a way to share and I do love social media-it is a great way to connect with so many others from Shelby Township to states all over the country." Youngblood’s blogs have …

Inspired by her son, a local woman is working to build a recreation center in Macomb County for children and families with special needs, specifically those with autism. A friend-raiser for the facility will be held April 21 at Lutheran North.
With a little luck and a great deal of community support, Hall Road could be home to the state’s first recreational facility for children with autism as early as March 2013. Play-Place for Autistic Children, or PAC, is the brainchild of Shelby Township resident Shell Jones, whose son Duane, now 9, was diagnosed with autism at age 2 ½. “My son loved Disney and Chuck E. Cheese's, but as a mom I was observant that people weren’t always sensitive to his challenges,” Jones said. “I needed a place where I could take him that he would feel comfortable and people would understand, OK, he’s having a meltdown, but he will eventually come out of this and resume play.” Working with Dr. Rick Solomon, the medical director of the Ann Arbor Center for …

Located in downtown Utica, Independent Opportunities of Michigan (IOM) is a private company providing helping hands and extending big hearts to special needs children adults and families in the local area.
A gem of a business in Utica that helps support people with special needs goes largely unnoticed. But, I am proud to share a little history and personal experience about such an amazing business. Independent Opportunities of Michigan was established in 1987. Its mission is to provide support and services to help enhance the lives of individuals and families who have special needs. All IOM employees are selected through an ordered hiring process, which includes a criminal history, driver's license and professional reference checks. Also includes at least one personal face-to-face interview about history and simple discussion about your hobbies and interests. Once hired, they then place you either with individual families or at group homes…

The very best thing about Erin's blog is that it is genuine, grounded in real life, and accessible to all of us. Although my journey is quite different from Erin's, I learn from her. I have learned how to cope with disappointment, how to see the good in the most difficult circumstances, how to open up to all the world offers us. Thank you to Shelby-Utica Patch and to all the readers out there who…   more ›
