'Future City' Competition Tests Trinity Lutheran Students' Talent, Imagination

Two teams from Trinity Lutheran School in Utica will compete against some 500 students from across Michigan Jan. 28 in the Michigan Regional Future City Competition.

Since the beginning of the school year, Trinity Lutheran students have been taking a crash course in community planning, and this month, they will put their skills and creativity to the test against 500 of their peers in the 2013 Michigan Regional Future City Competition. Organized by The Engineering Society of Detroit (ESD), Future City is a nationwide competition that challenges 6th, 7th and 8th grades students to envision a city 150-plus years into the future in which they would like to live, according to ESD. This year’s theme challenged students to "Rethink Runoff: Design Clean Solutions to Manage Stormwater Pollution." Trinity Lutheran Students Spearhead 'Purple Day' to Honor Teacher's Passing

Funeral for Assistant Principal Rose Remer held today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Utica.

To honor the passing of a beloved Trinity Lutheran teacher, students took it upon themselves to wear purple in honor of Rose Remer’s favorite color. Remer, who passed away Jan. 27 after 41 years at the school, never wore an outfit that didn’t have purple in it, according to Trinity Lutheran staff. Three seventh-grade students, who heard of their beloved teacher’s passing over the weekend while at a sleepover, decided to name Monday “Purple Day.” “We couldn't sleep and came up with the idea and started to call and text our friends and then it just spread," seventh-grader Kara Francis said.
