In Shelby Township, Republicans rule. During the 2012 elections Tuesday, every seat on the Shelby Township Board of Trustees was filled by a Republican, and all incumbents, except for one new trustee. Shelby Township incumbent Supervisor Rick Stathakis will hold the township’s top spot for another four years. Stathakis beat Independent candidate David Erickson for the spot with 20,102 to Erickson's 11,520. Twenty candidates for the Shelby Township Board of Trustees have been certified to appear on the Aug. 7 Primary Elections ballot.
Let the races begin. Twenty Shelby Township residents are vying for the seven spots that make up the Shelby Township Board of Trustees. Shelby Township Clerk Stanley Grot has verified all candidates nominating petitions, which were due by May 15, and the following petitions have been approved by the Macomb County Elections Department and will appear on the Aug. 7 Primary Elections Ballot. Current Trustee Michael Flynn has announced he plans on running in the November elections for township treasurer.
Shelby Township Trustee Michael Flynn is hoping residents have taken note of his fiscal policies and will vote him in as treasurer during the 2012 elections. Flynn has until May 15 to turn in signed petitions to officially enter the race, which he said he plans on collecting once the weather breaks. However, he told Patch he formed a candidate committee last year and already has a star-studded fundraiser planned to help fund his political campaign. The Shelby Township Board of Trustees approved a five-year application for industrial facilities tax abatement for Elite Plastic Products Inc. In return, the Shelby Township-based company said it plans on spending an additional $2.5 million on personal property such as new furniture, machinery and equipment. A change up in Shelby Township’s Freedom of Information Act procedure has sparked a heated political debate among the Board of Trustees and is now being dubbed “banker box gate." After allegations of imporpriety arose about Clerk Terri Kowal'a handling of documents in a resident's FOIA request in August, the board unanimously voted at an Oct. 4 meeting to transfer FOIA duties to the Human Resource Department. The company, under the Industrial Exemption Certificate for new Personal Property, had requested a 12-year extension on tax breaks in order to purchase more than $2 million in new equipment. The tax extension was approved, but the term was limited to five years. The deadline to submit signatures for the recall effort against Shelby Township Clerk Terri Kowal has passed, but five board members remain subjects of active recall efforts.
A recall attempt targeting Shelby Township Clerk Terri Kowal has failed. The deadline for the submission of voter signatures, which would have prompted a special recall election against the 21-year official, was Feb. 23. The process against Kowal began in August 2010 when Joy Sebastian filed a recall petition with the Macomb County Elections Committee. The petition claimed nepotism for a Feb. 2010 vote Kowal made to approve a promotion for her daughter, Amy Drake, to become the township’s senior coordinator. Later, Kowal told Patch that it's against the law not to vote, unless she had recused herself, which she suggested to the board before the vote. It would be especially nice if people would just stop with the negative comments about others and just let the board do it’s job. Why do you feel it necessary to always be stirring the pot? Get a life. What’s done is done. If the Nightingale Towing Company sues someone that’s their business and the outcome is the decision of a judge or a jury. It’s really that simple.   more ›
