Utica Schools' Career Expo to Feature Reps from 100 Fields

Utica Community Schools will sponsor its Career Expo-2013 from 7-9 p.m. Thursday, March 21, at Eisenhower High School. The event is free for interested students, parents and staff.

District Names 67 Utica High Seniors 'Academic Scholars'

Utica Community Schools' seniors who distinguish themselves academically during their high school careers are named Academic Scholars.

Utica High School boasts 67 Academic Scholars in its Class of 2013. According to Utica Community Schools, Academic Scholars are seniors who have "distinguished themselves by electing a rigorous program of study and maintaining a high academic standing during the past seven semesters." In addition to their academic excellence, many of these students have also participated in numerous curricular and extracurricular activities, including athletics, marching band, National Honor Society, Student Council, Key Club, SkillsUSA, DECA, SADD and foreign language clubs. Utica Schools Will 'Pick Up the Pace' in Science, Digital Learning, Superintendent Says

Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns said recent 2012 MEAP results show a need to strengthen science instruction across the district.

Though pleased with overall student performance on the 2012 Michigan Educational Assessment Program, or MEAP test, Utica Community Schools’ superintendent says there is always room for improvement, namely in the area of science. “We’re pleased with the performance overall, specifically in the area of math, which showed increased growth in all grades,” said Superintendent Dr. Christine Johns. “If you look at numbers across the county, you’ll observe our performance is very consistent in all of our subject areas and we’re pleased about that.” According to results released Monday, Utica students scored above state average in every subject and grade level tested by the 2012 MEAP. Detroit Lions Stars Visit UCS Elementary School Today to Present 10K NFL Grant

Six Detroit Lions will visit Jack Harvey Elementary School Tuesday to present a $10,000 fitness grant.

Christmas is coming early for Jack Harvey Elementary School students Tuesday when six Detroit Lions players visit the Utica Community School to present a $10,000 NFL grant. The NFL Play 60 grant will be used for the school’s health and wellness programming and equipment. Jack Harvey was the only school in Michigan to receive the grant. The NFL PLAY 60 Super School contest selected one school in each of the 32 NFL markets and two non-NFL markets to receive the cash. In addition to the cash, the winning schools get one-on-one time with NFL players. Utica High Father Targets Principal with Rolling Billboard For Porno Remark

A local parent has targeted Utica High School principal Janet Jones for teaching his daughter about the porno industry.

A Utica High School parent is driving around with a trailer criticizing the principal for teaching his 15-year-old daughter about porn, according to Fox 2 News.  Steven Werner told Fox 2 News that on Halloween, Utica Principal Janet Jones called his daughter down to her office because of her pink and black pirate costume.  The costume included a skirt and knee-high stockings with pink bows. Werner says Jones told his daughter that she looked like a porn star, according to the TV station. When Werner's daughter asked what a porn star was, Jones responded by telling her about the the profession.
