Patch Readers Reject Newest Call to Change Utica High Chieftains' Nickname

Readers reacted strongly to news that the Michigan Department of Civil Rights filed a complaint that American Indian nicknames—such as the Chieftains—harm students education and should be banned.

To dozens of Shelby-Utica Patch readers, there is no correlation between high school nicknames and students' education and therefore, no reason why schools like Utica High School should be forced to reject their "Chieftains" identity. The issue, which has been addressed numerous times in the past, returned to the forefront of conversation with a recent complaint filed by the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. In the complaint, the department argued that high school nicknames—such as Chieftains for Utica High School—harm students’ education. The department went on to ask the U.S. Department of Education to ban the use of American Indian mascots, nicknames and “imagery” at the high school level, the Detroit Free Press reported. The Michigan Department of Civil Rights filed a complaint that American Indian nicknames—such as the Chieftains—harm students education and should be banned.

Should Utica High School change its nickname? The answer is yes, according to the Michigan Department of Civil Rights. The department said that high school nicknames—such as Chieftains for Utica High School—harms students’ education and asked the U.S. Department of Education to ban the use of American Indian mascots, nicknames and “imagery” at the high school level, the Detroit Free Press reports. Utica was one of 35 high schools mentioned in the Michigan Department of Civil Rights’ complaint. "A growing and unrebutted body of evidence now establishes that the use of American Indian imagery reinforces stereotypes in a way that negatively impacts the potential for achievement by students with American Indian ancestry," the department said …

Utica Schools Announce Date Change for Class of 2013 Graduation

The new graduation date for the Utica Community Schools' Class of 2013 is Sunday, June 9, at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Mark your calendars, Class of 2013. Utica Community Schools' has moved the date for its high school graduations. Due to a scheduling conflict, the graduation date for Utica, Eisenhower, Stevenson and Henry Ford II has been moved to Sunday, June 9 at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The date was previously June 8. While this date change will not affect the scheduled times for the ceremonies, it will impact the senior all night parties, which will now be held June 9 at each high school.  The times for graduation remain as follows: The commencements for Utica's specialized high school programs will take place at their previously scheduled times. The Utica Academy for International Studies will graduate its students at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, …

The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans.

There's no doubt that Shelby Township and Utica students know how to support their sports teams. But, does Utica or Eisenhower high school have the best fan section around?  Fans, you've now got a chance to prove it. The Michigan High School Athletic Association is hosting its second annual Battle of the Fans and is ready to highlight the best student cheering sections across Michigan. To enter, follow these rules: The MHSAA Student Advisory Council will choose five finalists. MHSAA officials will visit each school on a Friday game night to see the fan section in person. The winner will be announced on Feb. 22 and will be invited to the Class B Boys Basketball Semifinals at the Breslin Center on March 22 to be recognized and receive a …

PHOTOS: Utica Dedicates Football Win To Hometown Heroes

Chieftains win 29-0 in first annual game honoring police, fire, and EMS workers.

The rain couldn’t dampen spirits Friday night during the first ever Hometown Heros football game. The Utica High Chieftains defeated the Henry Ford II Falcons 29-0 in what was not only a football game, but also a way to honor local law enforcement and firefighters.  The game served as a way to recognize Utica, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights police, fire and EMS workers, as well as the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department.  This is the first time a game has been dedicated to the local “heros” and is being played as a way to thank workers for keeping the community safe. Utica players wore special red, white, and blue jerseys honoring police, fire and EMS stickers.  Other game activities were on the program as a way to recognize heroes. …

Oct. 19 Hometown Heroes Football Game Dedicated To Local Police, Fire, EMS

Donations sought for UHS 2013 grad who plans law enforcement career and to recognize a hero.

An upcoming football game isn’t just for fun, but to honor local law enforcement and firefighters. The Oct. 19 Utica High verses Ford II gridiron game is being dubbed “Hometown Heroes” to recognize Utica, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights police, fire and EMS workers, as well as the Macomb County Sheriff’s Department.  This is the first time a game has been dedicated to the local “heros” and is being played as a way to thank workers for keeping the community safe. All players will have special police, fire and EMS sticker on their helmets.  “It’s nice that they’re recognizing us. Everybody is looking forward to it,” said Shelby firefighter John McCoy. Utica Takes on L'Anse Creuse During Homecoming Game Friday

It will be a pleasant homecoming indeed for Utica tonight if the varsity football team beats L'Anse Creuse.

For Utica High School, Friday will be a big night. Homecoming game on their home turf. The game against L'Anse Cruese kicks off at 7 p.m. at Swineheart Field. Utica students will head to homecoming Saturday night at the school. Jersey Mike's Sub Shop Opens Shelby Township Location Today

The much anticipated Jersey Mike's Sub Shop has opened its first location in Macomb County in Shelby Township.

Jersey Mike's Sub Shop opened it's doors at 10 a.m. Wednesday - no doubt with a line out the door for free submarine sandwiches with a $1 donation to the Utica High Athletic Boosters Club. The new shop, located at 12161 23 Mile Road, will be offering the $1 subs through Sunday. You must have a promotional card in order to receive the deal.  Before the restaurant opened, nearly 10,000 cards were mailed out in the community. Also, the offer is only good at the Shelby Township location. All the proceeds will be donated to Utica and Eppler Junior High Schools' booster clubs. Game On: Utica Kicks Off UCS Football Season Against Rochester

Utica High School kicks off Utica Community Schools High School varsity football season with first game Thursday.

It's that time of year when the cheerleaders emerge and the fresh football teams energetically burst onto the field: High school football season.  Utica High School will kick off the varsity season with the first game Aug. 23 against Rochester at Rochester's home field. Most night games begin at 7 p.m. Eisenhower High's first game will be against Port Huron at Wayne State University at 1:30 p.m. Homecoming for both Utica and Eisnhower will be Sept. 28.
