Dave Faber Named Utica Police Chief

Interim Chief Dave Faber was promoted to the permanent chief of police.

Interim Chief Dave Faber will now serve as Utica's permanent chief of police. Faber was sworn in as the new chief during the May 8 City Hall meeting, where he was also named the recipient of the 2012 Utica Police Officer of the Year award. Faber has served as the interim chief of the Utica Police Department since June 2011, when he was appointed to fill the vacancy left by Chief Michael Reaves, who took a job as chief of the Port Huron Police Department. "We (Utica Mayor Jacqueline Noonan and I) agreed that we were happy with the direction the department was headed and we wanted to continue on that path," said Faber. Utica Police Chief Search on Hold

Until Utica's budget is balanced, the search for a new police chief has been temporarily suspended.

The search for a new Utica Police Chief is on hold until the city can balance its budget. Utica Mayor Jacqueline Noonan said that by law, the budget is due on June 30, so the hiring process is on hold for another month to six weeks. “This is not unusual,” Noonan said.  “It’s just that the process to appoint a new police chief comes during a very critical time in our budget. As everyone knows local government has been impacted very negatively by the drop in property values and the amount of tax collections.” The former Utica Police Chief, Michael Reaves, left the department in March to become the chief of police in Port Huron. Since his departure, the police department has been accepting applications. Noonan said more than 50 applications …

Utica Police Chief Michael Reaves celebrates the end of a long career in Utica and the beginning of another chief post in Port Huron.

Current and past colleagues, friends and family members gathered Thursday night at Villa Penna's for Utica Police Chief Michael Reaves' retirement party. Reaves, 53, has accepted the job as the chief of police in Port Huron. Reaves, who has been with the Utica Police Department for 32 years and rose in the ranks from dispatcher to chief, was all smiles Thursday as his friends, former and future colleagues and family members came out to wish him well. Paul Brown, a current 41A District Court officer, said he has known Reaves for more than three decades, when the two were narcotics officers together for the Roseville police department. “He’ll be welcomed in Port Huron. He’ll do well," said Fraser Lt. Jeff Newton, who said he has known Reaves…

Utica Police Chief Accepts Job in Port Huron

After 32 years in the department, Utica Police Chief Michael Reaves will start his new job on March 27.

The search for a new police chief in Utica is on after Michael Reaves announced he would be leaving the department to take a job as the head of the Port Huron police. Reaves’ last day with the Utica Police Department will be March 25. Reaves, who has been working at the Utica Police Department for 32 years and rose in ranks from dispatcher to chief, said he has enjoyed every last minute with the department. “I loved it. It’s been a fantastic experience working with the residents, the city and the business owners,” he said. However, the 53-year-old chief said he applied for the job in Port Huron because he felt it was time to try a new challenge. “I feel that change is a good thing and it reinvigorates you,” he said, adding that Port Huron …
