Former UCS Student Athlete Dies During Workout in Macomb County

Serxho Guraleci, a Stevenson High School graduate and Wayne State football player, died while working out Jan. 21.

Utica Community Schools lost one of its former star athletes Monday with the unexpected death of 22-year-old Serxho Guraleci, according to The Detroit Free Press. Guraleci was a Stevenson High School graduate who most recently played senior nose tackle for Wayne State University's football team. He died while working out Monday morning in Macomb County, the Free Press reports. The cause of death has not been reported.

Looking for a Volunteer Opportunity? Tutor Adults Learning to Read

Macomb Literacy Partners is looking for volunteer tutors who want to teach adults to read.

If your New Year’s resolution involves making an impact on the world, helping one single person better himself or herself or dedicating your time to a non-profit organization, then consider becoming a volunteer tutor to help an adult learn to read. An estimated 10-13 percent of the population in Macomb County is illiterate.  That means there are seniors who don’t know how to read their prescription pill bottles and adults who can’t fill out job applications. Macomb Literacy Partners helps two different types of adult learners: the American-born low-level reader who went to school in the USA but didn't master the skills necessary to become a fluent reader—and who now "fakes" it; and the foreign-born adult who is trying to master the …
