Sweet Dreams Come True as Erma's Frozen Custard Opens April 1

Shelby Township custard store prepares to open for the season.

No joke. Erma’s Original Frozen Custard in Shelby Township will open for the season on Monday, April 1. "Although the weather isn't quite what we would like it to be, we are ready to serve our customers with a warm smile and our delicious frozen custard," Erma’s general manager Jason Schoenherr said in a press release. Erma’s will offer 10 percent off custard orders for customers wearing an Erma’s T-shirt or hoodie from April 1 through April 7 Erma’s, located at 6451 Auburn Rd. in Shelby Township, will be open from 11 a.m.-9 p.m. starting April 1. Erma's Frozen Custard Preps for April 1 Opening, Adds Frequent Customer Card for 2013

Erma's Frozen Custard on Auburn Road in Shelby Township will open for the season on April 1.

Come rain, snow or shine, Erma's Frozen Custard will start its 71st season in Shelby Township on April 1. A summer tradition for generations, the small roadside stand served its first bowl of custard in 1942 and has become a local legend in the seven decades since. "It’s a nostalgia thing," said manager Cindy Schoenherr. "It’s always been there and it’s still kind of the same. We really do work hard to keep that mom-and-pop ambiance and that old-fashioned feeling. It’s more of a destination than just going to get ice cream somewhere." Located at 6451 Auburn Rd. in Shelby Township, Erma's opens each year on April 1 and serves up its famous frozen custard through Halloween. Three Authors To Sign Children’s Books At Erma’s

Three authors, each with books featuring positive messages for children, are slated to appear and sign copies of their books at Erma’s Frozen Custard in Utica.  St. Clair Shores resident Nancy Steyer Stapleton is author of Be A Gem: Let Your Goodness Shine, a book about positive role models and character traits, such as sportsmanship and respect toward others. She will sign copies of the $10 book Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m.  Author Julie Llewellyn’s I Am Not A Wimp! And I’ll Prove It is about one girl’s determination to learn to water ski one summer.  Llewellyn, of Waterford, will appear at Erma’s Aug. 12 from 2 to 4 p.m. This book costs $9.50.  The Hero In Me tackles the serious topic of bullying for younger children. Erma’s Custard Collecting Toys For Tots

Dessert spot celebrates the holidays in July by collecting toys.

Erma’s Original Frozen Custard in Utica will collect donations July 23-29, for Toys for Tots and customers bringing in items will receive 20 percent off their bill.  The dessert spot, located at 6451 Auburn Road, is marking its Christmas in July celebration by hosting the Tots collection. “It's a good feeling to be able to help the Toys for Tots organization. We're trying to make it easy for people to help a good cause," said General Manager Jason Schoenherr.  Customers interested in making a donation should bring in a new, unwrapped toy for a child of any age.  The U. S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys during October, November and December each year, and distributes those toys as Christmas gifts to …

Former UCS Educator Turned Author Signs New Book On Bullying

“I Am Stumped” children’s book is about friendship and making good choices.

Lisa Rivard, a former Utica Community Schools principal and teacher who now works as a Language Arts Assistant for the Macomb Intermediate School District, will sign copies of her new book, “I Am Stumped” July 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Erma’s Frozen Custard, 6451 Auburn Road.  The book’s message is about anti-bullying and helps kids to be empathetic towards others. “It is my hope that this book will encourage children to have the confidence to solve problems on their own or to ask for help from a trusted adult, if needed,” Rivard said.  Rivard, of New Baltimore, will sell copies of the book for $10 at the event and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the local library. Winter Gives Erma's Frozen Custard Time to Prep for Busy Season

Known for its Custard Puff, Erma's has been in business for 69 years and opened a second location last summer.

Erma’s Frozen Custard in Shelby Township spends the winter preparing for another busy year of serving frozen custard and its famous Custard Puff. Erma’s is closed for the winter, but that does not mean the manager, Cindy Schoenherr, gets a vacation. So what do seasonal business employees do all year? Schoenherr attended The Great Lakes Ice Cream and Fast Food Association’s 44th annual Convention and Trade Show held in Lansing this February. The three-day weekend was spent in seminars on various topics, such as training, marketing strategies, new products and planning off-site events. Schoenherr said there may even be a new item added to Erma’s menu. During the winter, the weekly flavors are also decided for the 30 weeks they are open. …
