First Impressions Count When it Comes to Home Sweet Home

Does your entryway say 'welcome home?' These design tips can help create cheerful greetings.

From your driveway to your walkway to your front door, there are several eye-catching ways to welcome guests, family, and, heck, even yourself, in style. I went the Irish route when sprucing up my entryway. If you’ve been to Dublin, you’ve seen the renowned “doors of Dublin,” which pop with pretty and unique colors. I think the Irish would approve of my front door, which is a bright blue, as are my shutters. On a recent trip to Ireland, our guide told us with a wink that legend has it that residents paint their doors a unique color so they can immediately recognize their home when they’ve had one too many pints of Guinness at the local pub. Others told me that actually the Irish tend to paint their doors in pretty colors due to the large …

Glass Adds Class to Any Home or Occasion

New or old, glass and its sparkling qualities appeals to many. See some of the best at galleries and festivals around Metro Detroit.

Cleary, glass is beautiful. Stop reading this now and look around. Do you see anything made from glass? Take a second to think of the process of how it was made and the skill behind it, whether it’s an everyday drinking glass or a heavy, richly hued decorative bowl. Simply put, glass is made from a basic mixture of silica, which comes from fine white sand or pulverized sandstone, sodium bicarbonate and lime. See it in all its colorful, reflective, sparkling wonder at the Annual International Glass Invitational Awards Exhibition, now at the Habatat Galleries in Royal Oak. Running through Saturday, the display features more than 90 works of glass from around the world and this year is celebrating its 40th International Invitational. Epiphany…

9 Tips to a Green, Healthy Lawn

From maintaining the mower to raking, aerating and fertilizing, here's what you can do – and when – to ensure the grass is greener on your side of the driveway.

We can probably say that it’s safe now to trade snow shovels for garden shovels, snowplows for lawn mowers and mittens for garden gloves. With temperatures climbing into the 60s on a regular basis it’s a downright heat wave — plenty warm to start sprucing up lawns and garden beds. Now is the time to consider everything from mulching grass and checking for disease to inspecting your lawn mower and choosing a date to fertilize. Here, lawn and garden experts offer nine tips for treating your patch of green well and getting it in tip-top shape: Inspect your lawn mower, said Joe Kosiara, master gardener at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores. “Pull the plug wire, clean under the deck, remove and sharpen the blade, remove and …

Great advice. The only thing a person could add to this is treat for grub worm. 6 times out of 10 those dead patches, (if you don't have a dog that you allow to pee on the lawn) are caused by grub worms munching on the roots of your grass. Treat once in Spring and after 1 or 2 seasons you should be well below the maximum recommended 8 larvae per square foot of sod.   more ›

Spring Entertaining Welcomes Tabletop Treasures

Set your Easter, Mother's Day or brunch-with-friends table with a special look that reflects your passions – from elegant crystal to rustic pottery.

Dozens of torn-out magazine pages fill my recipe files, and most don’t have recipes on them. Instead, the worn sheets showcase beautiful images and tips for the second (food is No. 1) most important key to a good meal: dining table ambiance. I recently visited the House of Waterford Crystal in Waterford, Ireland, which charged up my passion for entertaining friends and family and lingering at the table long after dessert is served. Beyond the coffee, after-dinner drinks, chitchat and big laughs that table-lingering offers, it’s just good for the soul to sit back, relax and enjoy a pretty tablescape peppered with everything from elegant crystal to rustic pottery. After watching and listening to the Irish Waterford crystal blowers and …
