Two Shelby House Fires Probably Linked To July 4 Fireworks

Firefighters, chief not fans of new fireworks law.

The new fireworks law not only lead to an increase in noise, it may also be linked to two July 4 house fires in Shelby Township.

Firefighters responded to a house fire at a home on Schoenherr Road, the Oakland Press reported. The fire began on the roof of the home and spread to the attic. No one was in the home at the time of the fire. It’s likely fireworks caused the fire, although the incident is still under investigation, according to Chief Doug Miller.

In another incident a projectile firework launched into a window pane in a home on Cedarwood Drive, near 22 Mile Road and M-53. No one was injured in the incident, but firefighters had a hard time reaching the home because of the number of spectators.  “Because there were so cars parked in the area, we could hardly get down the street,” Miller said.

State Rep. Harold Haugh, D-Roseville, championed the law that made banned fireworks in Michigan legal.  Shelby Township interim fire chief Jim Swinkowski told the Oakland Press he’s not a fan of the new fireworks law and plans to write a letter to Haugh expressing his frustration.
