Robert Murphy Candidate Profile

In the run up to the August primary, Patch has invited all local candidates to complete a Q&A to build a comprehensive voter's guide that will assist people at the polls.

Romeo resident and Democrat Robert Murphy, 55, is running for the State Representative - 36th District. Murphy has served on various boards and commissions including: the Michigan State Court of Administration, the State Representative Advisory Panel, Cub and Boy Scouts of America, and as a substitute catechist for his church. He was also active in several schools. He said he has two presidential appointments.

Murphy has three sons: Thomas, 21, Cody, 18, and Bobby, 14, and has been married to wife, Katherine, for 22 years. He enjoys wood working, gardening, sports and time with family and friends. “It’s life, you live it,” he said.

I hadn't intended to run for office, as the boys are both off to Boy Scout camp as counselors. My wife, Katherine, and I were going to catch up on time, romance, as well chores. Then, one person after another kept asking me to run.

2) If elected, what issues would you like to focus on?

First, I will do away with legislator pensions and perks, including the $1,000 a month allowance for travel to and from work. Next, I will limit and/or abolish political action committee campaign contributions. Also, I will plan for the future of invasive species; we haven’t been successful with the Emerald Ash Borer or Asian carp. Also, I will completely redo the business tax and educate our boards of education.  In addition, we live in the Great Lakes state, yet, we pay some of the highest water bills in the country.

 3. What personal and professional accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my beautiful wife of 22 years and my three wonderful sons (two will be Eagle Scouts with the Boy Scouts of America).

 4. Is there one person who has been the most influential in your life? Who?

My wife and father-in-law, as well as my own father who always encouraged his children. Also, Thomas Jefferson.

5. What are key ways you would have residents make a difference locally?

Get informed. Be informed, and get involved. Ask questions and expect answers.

 6. What do you like most about Shelby Township? Do you have a favorite spot in town?

We live in Washington Township, yet we have a Romeo mailing address. Downtown Romeo is a nice place to visit as well as live right next to.
